Power games in ancient Rome
Where there is power, there is resistance: in Claudio Monteverdi's opera, these two forces warp the brains and hearts of empresses, soldiers and court ladies. The philosopher Seneca strives in vain to calm the yearnings and selfishness of all involved. The scandalous rise of Poppea to Roman empress at Nero's side is at the centre of Claudio Monteverdi's last opera. Kerstin Avemo makes her debut as Poppea. Anne Sofie von Otter continues her collaboration with director Christoph Marthaler at Theater Basel. Laurence Cummings conducts the La Cetra Barockorchester.

Nach der szenischen «Winterreise» vor zwei Jahren kehrt die schwedische Mezzosopranistin Anne Sofie von Otter erneut ans Theater Basel zurück. Dem Schatten Schuberts entkommen, hat sie sich für Monteverdis «Poppea» nun mit den Rachegelüsten einer antiken Kaisersgattin gestählt.
Diese Diskrepanz von einlullender Barockmusik und der Brutalität des inhaltlichen Geschehens musste Marthaler gar nicht dazu erfinden. Sie ist inhaltliches Prinzip der Oper. So gönnt Monteverdi dem menschenverachtenden Paar Nero und Poppea am Schluss seines Werkes eines der schönsten Liebesduette der gesamten Opernliteratur.
Eine handverlesene Truppe Alte-Musik-Spezialisten führt klangvoll, zielsicher und passgenau durch die Partitur, angeführt vom Dirigenten Laurence Cummings, der – welche Überraschung – auch mal singt und seinen lupenreinen Tenor erblühen lässt.
(Kaiserin Ottavia) wird von Nero, der ihrer überdrüssig geworden ist, verstossen, damit der Kaiser seine Geliebte Poppea heiraten kann. Nerone wird in Basel vom Countertenor Jake Arditti gesungen, Poppea von der Sopranistin Kerstin Avemo. Und Laurence Cummings dirigiert das La Cetra Barockorchester Basel.
