Joachim Rathke studied musicology and Romance studies in Hamburg and opera directing at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. He has been working as a freelance director since 2001 and has staged numerous operas at theatres in Regensburg, Koblenz, Halle, Kiel, Giessen and Salzburg, as well as at the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre, the Engadin Opera Festival in St. Moritz and at Opera Ireland in Dublin. He has worked closely with Christoph Marthaler on productions at the Opéra national de Paris, the Hamburg State Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Ruhrtriennale and the Salzburg Festival, among others. Teaching assignments have taken him to Leipzig and Munich as well as Bangkok and Tokyo. He was recently engaged at Theater Basel - again in collaboration with Christoph Marthaler - for 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' (2024).
