Family. For us, that means people of different ages who are connected at heart. Theater Basel has a lot to offer them. Watching and taking part, everything is possible. Throughout the season, we put on plays especially for children aged 3 and over, young people and their grown-ups. All information about the productions can be found on this page. There is also a regular extra programme for families. For example, children's afternoons, children's tours, the Wednesday Feet and theatre play clubs. We are also happy to celebrate birthdays with you! Another new programme is the cultural compass, which turns children into cultural experts.

We look forward to seeing you!

Pieces for children

Every Wednesday at 3.00 pm, children meet in the Public Foyer to play, read, make things, discover and reflect together in the children's corner. Together with the Theater Public team, the children travel through the theatre universe, act, create new worlds, listen to stories and discover the theatre. Always different and always a lot of fun.

  • For children from 4 to 8 years
  • Participation is free, you can also come spontaneously
  • Parents are liable for their children
  • Starts from October 2024

Theater Basel is pretty big. So big that you could easily get lost in the many corridors, between doors, stages and floors. The guided tours are aimed specifically at children aged 6 and over and can also be attended without an accompanying person. More

For adults, we offer a public guided tour of Theater Basel twice a month on Saturdays from October to June. More

Dance, exuberant movement, lots of shared imagination and creativity - a party format for children aged 4 and over.
Our dance teacher Andrea Frei is inspired by the productions of the ballet section and the working methods of the choreographers. From time to time, the party community sneaks into a Ballett Basel rehearsal and brings the choreographies they have watched back to the Foyer Public in their heads and feet.

  • Training is free and without obligation. Spontaneous drop-ins possible
  • Every Wednesday from 16:15 to 17:00 (except during school holidays)
  • For children aged 4 and over and their accompanying adults
  • Contact: Andrea Frei a.frei@theater-basel.ch, +41 (0)61 295 14 79
  • Starts from October 2024

This season we are once again bringing a family concert to the stage. Children can accompany the world-famous recorder player Maurice Steger in the guise of the title character on the journey of 'Tino Flautino and Leo the cat' through the history of music. A musical delight for young and old.

We discover books, climb into them, test gravity with them, shake them out, dance them and set the stories in motion. The fingers dance verses and the mouth makes matching noises. A moving approach to books, dance and theatre for the very youngest. Before and after, the children's corner and the many books from the GGG Stadtbibliothek Basel in the Foyer Public offer further opportunities to play and linger. The theatre café is happy to provide cakes, coffee, Babycchino and Tripp Trapps.

  • For children from 1 to 3 ½ years.
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Once a month, every Thursday, 10:15 am
  • 10.10. / 14.11. / 12.12. / 16.01. / 13.02. / 10.04.
  • Younger children are welcome to join in with their carer as they wish
  • In the children's corner of the Foyer Public, access via the theatre café

A joint format of GGG Stadtbibliothek Basel and Theater Basel.

The play clubs are the Theater Basel for everyone who wants to join in. All children who want to try their hand at theatre can do so in two play clubs. Welcome to our play clubs!

We look forward to your visit with the whole family! We also know that the question quickly arises as to which production is suitable for the whole family.

In order to be able to give you an initial classification, our education team has thought about age-specific competences for each of the 40 productions, such as the ability to abstract, length of the play, depictions of violence or taboo topics, reception skills for forms of play and linguistic content as well as the demands of the plays on the ability to concentrate. Based on this, we try to categorise the age for which a production offers access and formulate an initial age recommendation.

These recommendations are intended to be a guide, but not an absolutely valid indication, no age restriction and also not an unchangeable number. Sometimes the production idea changes during the rehearsal phase. In this case, we also correct our age recommendation. The current recommendations can be found on our website.
