Artistic Director and Artistic Director Opera

Benedikt von Peter was born in Cologne in 1977 and studied musicology, German studies, law and singing in Bonn. He then worked as an assistant director at various theatres and founded an independent theater collective. After several years in the independent scene, he directed at theaters and operas in Germany and Switzerland (including Theater Basel, Frankfurt Opera, Staatstheater Hannover, Komische Oper and Deutsche Oper Berlin). From 2012 to 2016, Benedikt von Peter was head of the music theater department at Theater Bremen. He has received awards including the Götz Friedrich Prize, the Der Faust Theatre Prize and the Kurt Hübner Prize in 2014 for the music theater program and his own productions at Theater Bremen. From 2016 to 2021, Benedikt von Peter was artistic director of the Lucerne Theater. Since the 20/21 season, he has been Artistic Director of Opera at Theater Basel. Most recently, the revival of his production of ‹La traviata› and his new production of ‹Ring des Nibelungen› were staged here. The 25/26 season will see the revival of his production of ‹Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny›.
