After studying singing in Canada, the Canadian-Polish mezzo-soprano Marta Herman was engaged at the Frankfurt Opera Studio. From 2016-21 she was a permanent ensemble member at the Staatstheater Kassel. Her roles there included Suzuki ('Madama Butterfly'), Bradamante ('Alcina'), Hänsel ('Hänsel und Gretel'), Brigitta ('Die tote Stadt'), Cherubino ('Le nozze di Figaro'), Emone ('Antigona'), Tierra ('Los Elementos') and as an alto solo ('B.A.C.H'). For her acclaimed debut as Suzuki in 2019, she was awarded the Young Talent Prize of the Fördergesellschaft Staatstheater Kassel. Other guest engagements in recent seasons include Grimgerde ('Die Walküre') at the Leipzig Opera and in the new 'Ring' cycle at the Tyrolean Festival Erl, Bradamante ('Alcina') at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, 3rd Lady ('Zauberflöte') at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, 3rd Wood Elf ('Rusalka') at the Staatstheater Kassel and 3rd Lady ('Rusalka') at the Staatstheater Kassel. Waldelfe ('Rusalka'), 2nd Dame ('Zauberflöte'), several roles in Martinů's ('Julietta') at the Frankfurt Opera, Lisetta ('Il mondo della luna') at the Salzburg State Theatre and La Marchande ('Les mamelles de Tiresias') at the Dutch National Opera. In addition to opera, she is particularly dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. For example, she has performed with the ExVoCo Ensemble in Stuttgart, the tonArt Festival Esslingen, the International Music Institute Darmstadt and in Canada at the Toronto Luminato Festival, The Music Gallery Toronto and Tapestry New Opera, including repertoire by many Canadian composers. In Kassel she was recently engaged as Polina ('Pique Dame'), First Norn ('Götterdämmerung'), Flosshilde ('Das Rheingold') and Grimgerde ('Die Walküre'). She can be seen at the Theater Basel in 24/25 as First Norn in 'Ring des Nibelungen'.
