A new 'Ring' for Basel 2023-2025

Monumental, fascinating and controversial: Richard Wagner's 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' is still the subject of controversy today. Sixteen hours in four evenings - created over more than a quarter of a century - tell of the downfall of a system of power, the fateful failure of the hero and the utopia of love. After more than 40 years, 'Der Ring' returns to Theater Basel. The first two parts can be seen in the 23/24 season: 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walküre'.
In the 24/25 season, the two parts 'Siegfried' and 'Götterdämmerung' will premiere in a second autumn festival series, followed by three complete cycles in spring 2025.

Our tip: If you attend 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walküre' in June 2024 and 'Siegfried' and 'Götterdämmerung' in September, you will be the first to see the entire cycle in September!

Greetings from the artistic director

The new production of the four-part opera cycle examines the effects of Wotan's patriarchal rule of power on subsequent generations. We have also invited theatre makers with different backgrounds and aesthetic approaches to adopt independent perspectives on Wagner's world drama and comment on them critically. The Gintersdorfer/Klassen collective, which works with performers from Côte d'Ivoire, meets the documentary theatre duo Hans-Werner Kroesinger and Regine Dura. British sound artist Matthew Herbert is developing a participatory choir installation on the theatre square. From 9 September, a festival will form around these five premieres. A late-night series and introductory events complete the programme of 'The Ring - A Festival', which this supplement provides an overview of. Enjoy discovering the programme!

The 'Ring' cycles are complemented by a varied supporting programme with additional concerts, musical introductions and discussion formats.

Wagner's Ring as a complete experience

With a work lasting four to five and a half hours, there needs to be a breather in between. That's why the first interval of 'Die Walküre', 'Siegfried' and 'Götterdämmerung' lasts 40 minutes. Enough time for a walk, a 'Ring' plate, a drink or the famous 'Nuremberg sausage' fresh from the grill. Each 'Ring' performance on sale costs between CHF 30 and CHF 150.

Combination offer: 'Ticket & Ring plate'

Buy your ticket together with a vegetarian 'Ring' plate. For 'Das Rheingold', we serve it one hour before the start, for the other three 'Ring' operas, the 'Ring' plate is ready for you with a drink in the foyer at the start of the 40-minute interval.
