Dance, discourse and pop culture

The transcultural group Gintersdorfer / Klaßen initiated the encounter between Wagner's 'Ring' and showbiz in the Ivory Coast last autumn. As part of last year's Ring Festival, they analysed 'Das Rheingold' and 'Die Walküre'. Following on from this assignment, they are now ready to subject 'Siegfried' and 'Götterdämmerung' to a musical hybridisation. In doing so, they are sharpening their ability to endure opposing opinions against the Wagnerian stereotypes that link anti-Semitism with innocence and misogyny with transcendence. Does music serve to find the truth? Or will the woodland bird chirp sweetly and call for murder for all eternity? After twenty successful years, the last big Gintersdorfer / Klaßen show!

This performance is offered as a Relaxed Performance. The soundscape will be very intense and loud. Hearing protection will be provided. The audience will be invited to join in on stage. This is voluntary. It is possible to leave and return to the performance space at any time. There are various places in the foyer where you can withdraw and take a break.

We celebrate the partnership between Basel and Yopougon with artistic contributions, community events, a panel discussion and the 'Yopougon-Ring Vol. 2'.

On 12 October 2024

The Partnership Day at Theater Basel focuses on the relationship between Basel and Yopougon, the largest district of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The official city partnership has existed since 2021 and has strengthened links between the two cities, such as the research activities of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d'Ivoire (CSRS). Theater Basel also maintains a relationship with Yopougon through its artistic exchange with the performance group Gintersdorfer/Klaßen, which has already produced shows in both cities. On 12 October 2024, these partnerships will be highlighted, celebrated and deepened. The varied day with exhibitions, dance and music performances, a panel discussion and an Ivorian aperitif is free of charge and open to all interested parties. At the same time, this day will be an opportunity to think constructively about partnerships between the so-called "Global North" and "Global South" for the future.

Programme

The German-Ivorian group Gintersdorfer/Klaßen performs together with dancers from the Basel street dance scene and also shows results from the previous workshop.

The visual artist Svetlana Coffi alias Casac shows an interactive performance about the concept of "identity".

What could partnerships between the "Global North" and the "Global South" look like in the future? The Ivorian historian and poet Henri-Michel Yéré will speak with experts from culture and science: Marilyn Umurungi (curator), Sandro Lunin (theatre and festival director), Tabea R. Weber (founder of 'Sankofa Risin'), Jürg Utzinger (director of Swiss TPH, epidemiologist), Lucien Gazi (biologist, head of the 'Next Generation Scientist Program' at Novartis)

Parallel to the panel discussion, there will be a supervised tour of the theatre for children.

Address by the President of the Government, Dr Conradin Cramer. Afterwards, everyone is invited to linger, enjoy and socialise together.

This will be followed at 19:00 by the performance of 'The Yopougon Ring Vol. 2' on the main stage.

From 2 October, a photo exhibition by Svetlana Coffi, a video installation by Gintersdorfer/Klaßen and a chronological overview of various partnerships between Basel and Yopougon will be on display in the Foyer Public.
