Two plays about the abysses of desire

Director Christof Loy tackles the dark fairy tale world of Béla Bartók and combines two key symbolist works by the composer. The pantomime is about a mysterious Mandarin, who seems immortal and can only be defeated by true love. In the second part of the evening, Judith gradually comes closer to revealing the secret of her future husband, Duke Bluebeard, and discovers the cruel truth about his past. In Bartók's famous and only opera, Christof Fischesser and Evelyn Herlitzius play the dark and gloomy couple. Ivor Bolton, the principal conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel, will be conducting his first opera performance at Theater Basel.
