Sono
The baritone Sono Yu was born in Seoul in 1994. He graduated from Goyang High School of Arts and studied at Seoul National University with mezzo-soprano Dr Hyunjoo Yun and bass Attila Jun. He completed his performance master's degree at Indiana University South Bend and won prizes at various competitions such as the New Jersey Florham Opera Competition 2022, the NYIOP Premiere Competition 2021 and The Mary Trueman Art Song Vocal Competition in New York 2020. In Korea, he won first prize at the Music Chuncheon Concours and the Gimpo Philharmonic Orchestra Concours. He has performed with the Gimpo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Indiana University Orchestra and made his debut in the opera 'Le nozze di Figaro' as Count Almaviva. He has also performed roles in many other operas such as 'Tosca', 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia', 'Don Pasquale' and 'Gianni Schicchi'. He has also attended masterclasses with world-famous singers such as soprano Renée Fleming and basses Kwangchul Youn and Samuel Youn, gaining recognition for his unique musicality. He has been a member of OperAvenir at Theater Basel since the 23/24 season and has since sung in 'Il barbiere di Siviglia', 'Carmen', 'Rigoletto' and 'Mignon'.
