The Swiss tenor Rolf Romei studied in Winterthur and Karlsruhe and privately with Nicolai Gedda. He was a permanent ensemble member in St. Gallen and Augsburg as well as at the Staatstheater Oldenburg. Guest engagements have taken him to the opera houses of Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Bern, Düsseldorf and Graz, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Theater an der Wien, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Novaya Opera Moscow, the Edinburgh and Enescu Festivals in Bucharest, the Kampnagel Music Festival in Hamburg, the Ruhrtriennale and most recently to the English National Opera in London and as Max Der Freischütz at the Bregenz Festival. In addition to his stage work, Rolf Romei regularly performs lieder and chamber music recitals and is in demand as an interpreter of new music as well as a soloist in the great oratorios of the classical and romantic periods. Rolf Romei has been a member of the Basel Theater ensemble since 2006. Here he has appeared in the title roles in ‹Lohengrin›, ‹Parsifal›, ‹Hoffmanns Erzählungen›, ‹Faust›, ‹Idomeneo› and ‹Pelléas et Mélisande› as well as in ‹Rusalka›, ‹Elektra›, Stockhausen's ‹Donnerstag aus Licht›, Korngold's ‹Die tote Stadt›, Philip Glass' ‹Satyagraha›, the world premiere of ‹Diodati.Unendlich› and as Max and Don José Carmen. In the 24/25 season, he made his debut in Basel as Siegfried in ‹Ring des Nibelungen›.
