A self-discovery

'Der Steppenwolf' won Hermann Hesse the Nobel Prize and became a cult book. The reclusive intellectual Harry suffers from a conflict of identity. He despises bourgeois society but feels attracted to it. Then he meets the fun-loving and mysterious Hermione. She leads him to the "magical theatre". There he finally meets himself. Belgian director Lies Pauwels takes 'Steppenwolf' as an opportunity to question how we want to take ourselves seriously as individuals today.

Digital book table

Together with the dramaturgy department, the Basel Kulturhaus Bider & Tanner has been curating the book table for our plays for many years. The selection of books, CDs, DVDs, catalogues and sheet music is always available in the online shop. It's worth browsing regularly.

However, it is not the playful elements that have the strongest effect, but the monologues in which Haller expresses his disgust at contented mediocrity, wrestles with his own transience and the longings for the animalistic literally burst out of the actors. This reveals the full power of Hesse's language, which is just as alive today as it was a hundred years ago.

Basler Zeitung

Pauwels is known for her anarchic and playful productions, which like to break through the boundaries between theatre, dance, music and performance to create a large, colourful spectacle. These could be good prerequisites for cracking this colossus of an ego-fixated text.

NZZ

The ensemble play is a trump card; in addition, Sven Schelker reports wonderfully blasé-pressurised about his half-good day. And Jan Bluthardt lets wolfish snarls flash through again and again in his report on the man who has not learnt to be content.
