Nikoloz Lagvilava is a Georgian baritone who completed his vocal training at the State Conservatory in Tbilisi. He received further training at the Schloss Laubach International Opera Workshop and in Milan at the Academia del Teatro della Scala. In 2003, he was awarded first prize at the Georgian Singing Competition and in the same year became a soloist of the ensemble of the Georgian National Opera in Tbilisi. Since the 2017/18 season, Nikoloz has been a soloist of Aalto Musiktheater and Philharmonie Essen, where he has performed various roles, such as Luna (‹Il trovatore›), Rigoletto, Marcello (‹La bohème›), Jago (‹Otello›) and Escamillo (‹Carmen›). He has also made guest appearances at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo (Alfio, ‹Cavalleria rusticana›), the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow (Escamillo), the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava (Escamillo and Rigoletto), Komische Oper Berlin (Rigoletto), in Lille and Dijon (Nabucco) and at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (Scarpia, ‹Tosca›). His operatic repertoire also includes Renato (‹Un ballo in maschera›), Giorgio Germont (‹La traviata›), Amonasro (‹Aida›), Don Carlo di Vargas (‹La forza del destino›), Malatesta (‹Don Pasquale›), Guglielmo (‹Le villi›), Sharpless (‹Madama Butterfly›), Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso (‹Così fan tutte›), Figaro (‹Il barbiere di Siviglia›) and Aleko. As Rigoletto, Nikoloz will make his Theater Basel debut in the 2022/23 season.
