The horn player Martin Roos first studied in his native Lucerne with Jakob Hefti, then in Dresden with Professor Peter Damm and took part in master classes with Hermann Baumann, Radovan Vlatkovic and Karl Biehlig, among others. At the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis he studied natural horn with Thomas Müller. Martin Roos is now a freelance chamber musician and guest with leading early music ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Les Amis de Philippe, L'Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and Capriccio Basel. He was principal horn of the Basel Sinfonietta for many years. He learned to play the alphorn in its most original form in his homeland. Since then he has been a regular soloist, among others with the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra of Constance under the direction of Peter-Lukas Graf, the Biel Symphony Orchestra with the world premiere of Jost Meier's 'Alphorn Sounds' at the Festival of Arts in St. Moritz and at the Festival Alpentöne in Altdorf, as well as with the Berner Sinfonieorchester for the opening of the New Bundesplatz in Bern. He plays the entire repertoire written for the alphorn, but is passionate about further developing the expressive possibilities of this archaic instrument and gives courses in Germany, France and Switzerland.
