Direction

The German director Tilman aus dem Siepen was born in Luxembourg by chance and grew up in Shanghai, Moscow and Potsdam. After training as a violinist and percussionist, he studied music theater directing at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. During his studies, he met Hans Neuenfels and became his collaborator. While still a student, he staged ‹Der Freischütz› (Weber) and ‹Die Fledermaus› (Strauss) at Heimathafen Neukölln. The latter was described by the press as “trend-setting for operetta”. His production of ‹Die Kluge› (Orff) at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig was taken over by the Thüringer Landestheater Rudolstadt. Tilman aus dem Siepen has already worked as an assistant director at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Bayerische Staatsoper and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals. Since the 22/23 season, Tilman aus dem Siepen has been engaged as director at Theater Basel, where he made his Swiss debut as a director with ‹Mignon› (Thomas) and most recently staged ‹Das schlaue Füchslein› by Leoš Janáček.
