Martin G. Berger grew up in Berlin, Istanbul and Munich. His work as a director, author and translator has taken him all over the German-speaking world, including to the Hanover State Opera, Lucerne Theatre, Staatstheater Kassel, Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tischlerei), Staatstheater Darmstadt and Dortmund Opera. In 2020, he won the theatre prize 'Der Faust' in the category "Best Director Musical Theatre", having already been nominated for it in 2018. He also won the Karan Armstrong Prize of the Götz Friedrich Foundation, the 2016 German Musical Theatre Prize for "Best Director", the 2016 Trier Musical Award and the 2018 Orpheus for special services to operetta. His translations of 'Candide', 'Follies' and 'Anyone Can Whistle' are published by Musik und Bühne, 'La Cage Aux Folles' by Felix Bloch Erben. In 2021, he translated 'Maskerade' for Oper Frankfurt. His chamber opera 'ELFIE' premiered at the Neuköllner Oper in 2019, the musical 'Aus Tradition anders' at the Staatstheater Darmstadt in 2018, the musical 'Der geteilte Himmel' at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater in 2022 and 'Kasimir und Karoline' at the Staatsoper Hannover in 2023. The musical 'Der 35. Mai' will have its world premiere at Bremen Theatre in 2024; the new opera 'Frühlings Erwachen' will be staged at Kampnagel in 2025 as a production of the Hamburg State Opera. Martin G. Berger was opera director at the Mecklenburg State Theatre in the 21/22 season.
