Martin G. Berger was born in Berlin in 1987 and grew up in Berlin, Istanbul and Munich. He has worked throughout the German-speaking world as a director, author and translator, including at Theater Basel, Staatsoper Hannover, Luzerner Theater, Staatstheater Kassel, Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tischlerei), Staatstheater Darmstadt and Oper Dortmund. He has received numerous awards for his productions. In 2020, for example, Martin won the prestigious German Theatre Prize ‹Der Faust› in the category Best Direction Musical Theatre, having previously been nominated for the award in 2018. He has also won the Karan Armstrong Prize of the Götz Friedrich Foundation, the German Musical Theatre Prize 2016 for Best Director, the Trier Musical Award 2016 and the Orpheus for Special Services to Operetta 2018. Martin has also made a name for himself as an author and translator. His translation of ‹Maskerade› premiered at Oper Frankfurt in 2021 in a production by Tobias Kratzer. His chamber opera ‹ELFIE› (music by: Wolfgang Böhmer) premiered at Neuköllner Oper in 2019 and his musical ‹Aus Tradition anders› (with Jasper Sonne) was first staged at Staatstheater Darmstadt in 2018. His translations of ‹Candide›, ‹Follies› and ‹Anyone Can Whistle› have been published by Musik und Bühne, ‹La Cage Aux Folles› by Felix Bloch Erben. He has been the opera director at Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater since the 2021/22 season.
