Slavna Martinovic was born in Belgrade in 1977 and moved to Hong Kong with her parents as a child. She trained at the London College of Fashion. After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles, where she met costume designer Theadora Van Runkle, who had a decisive influence on her artistic development. She stayed in Los Angeles for five years, designing costumes for films and music videos and working as a stylist for celebrities and fashion magazines. In 2008, Slavna Martinovic founded her own fashion and jewellery label, which premiered at Berlin Fashion Week and was featured in magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. She continued her career in the visual arts and has since designed costumes for theatres all over the world, including Schauspiel Köln, Gothenburg Opera, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Konzerttheater Bern, Staatstheater Mainz and Moscow Ballet. Slavna Martinovic's work was shown in the exhibition 'Costume at the Turn of the Century 1990-2015' at the State Theatre Museum in Moscow. In 2009, she completed a Master's degree in Multimedia Arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade and was a visiting student at the Faculty of New Media at Goethe University in Frankfurt from 2015 to 2017. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She is thus continuing her decades-long fascination with the relationship between clothing, fashion and subculture.
