Castellucci Direction

The Italian director Romeo Castellucci studied painting and stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. In 1981 he founded the theater collective Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio together with Claudia Castellucci and Chiara Guidi. He staged numerous productions for which he was responsible as writer, director, set and costume designer, and lighting designer. Since 2011 Romeo Castellucci has also realized independent projects. His most recent productions include Schoenberg's 'Moses und Aron' (2015), 'Tannhäuser' (2017), 'Das Floss der Medusa' (2018), 'Die Zauberflöte' (2018) and 'Il primo omicidio' (2019). Castellucci has received numerous prizes and awards. In 2002, the French Minister of Culture named him Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, and in 2013 he received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his lifetime achievement. In 2014, he was nominated as Director of the Year in the critics' poll of Opernwelt magazine, and in 2017 his production of 'Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher' was named Production of the Year. At Theater Basel he is staging a scenic version of Mozart's 'Requiem' in 23/24.
