Adolphe Binder will be Artistic Director and Curator of Ballet Basel at Theater Basel from August 2023. She initiates and develops artistic productions that celebrate the power of dance art and leads the ensemble and team. Binder stands for a program that explores and stages dance in all its forms and supports and presents first-class international artist:ing. Her focus is on the artistic conception and development of multidisciplinary works. She is guided by the ambition to challenge the human spirit with her work, to interrogate the Conditio Humana in its facets, and to create exciting spaces for bold art. In earlier years, Binder worked as artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, artistic director and co-director at the State Opera in Gothenburg, founder of the production agency B+P Berlin, artistic director of the Berlin Ballet (formerly Tanztheater) of the Komische Oper and chief dramaturge of the ballet at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. She has also worked as a curator and cultural manager for international dance festivals and the Expo2000 world exhibition in Hanover, as well as for Friedrich Kulturzeitschriftenverlag. Binder was a resident at the Goethe Institute Vila Sul in Brazil, realized her own pieces, installations, happenings, published various publications on gender and body identity, and volunteered on advisory boards of universities (Folkwang Uni Essen, Palucca Uni Dresden) and cultural-political committees, among others. She sat on the jury of international choreography competitions and was co-director of the current umbrella organization Tanz Deutschland. Over the past decades, Binder has realized the production of more than 100 works, including acclaimed cross-artform and trend-setting collaborations. Binder was born in Romania (Transylvania) in 1969 and emigrated with her family to West Germany in 1978. She studied literature, philosophy, history and political science (M.A.) at Leibniz University Hannover and completed various programs in Creative Leadership. Her theater career began in 1994 at the Schauspielhaus der Niederstaatstheater in Hanover.
