A lamentation
The world's oldest surviving drama tells of the Greek victory over the Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis circa 480 BC – and from the unusual perspective of the defeated: After returning from Greece, the Persian king Xerxes faces the scorn of those who were left at home. So stung by defeat, he tears his splendid robes in shame. The chorus of the Persians sheds tears of remembrance for the dead in a dramatic mourning ritual. German-Iranian director Sahar Rahimi examines the west's relationship to the so-called others. She has translated Aeschylus' linguistically captivating text into a powerfully visual theatrical presence.
