Imposing on a guest
A young woman lives in a house, which is way too big for her, in the shadow of a triangular mountain. When a guest turns up, she takes him in without hesitation. He arouses her curiosity, but also quickly falls victim to her inquisitorial fantasies of power. The Basel-based author Ariane Koch focuses on this primal scene of a interpersonal encounter and promptly received numerous awards for her debut novel. Her parable-like story not only highlights our behaviour towards strangers, it also paints a wonderfully funny and at the same time profound picture of Swiss self-restraint. Placing high value on the actual text, Marie Bues stages the narrative as a polyphonic choral piece: who is imposing on whom?
