Choreographer, theatre director, set designer and performer Martin Zimmermann was born in 1970 and grew up in the small village of Wildberg in Switzerland. After completing an apprenticeship as a decoration designer, he graduated from the Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC) in Paris. For more than 20 years he has been inventing, choreographing and staging visual and physical theatre without words and whose mixture of contemporary circus, dance, theatre and spectacular stage installations has delighted large audiences. His plays are performed worldwide, including at BAM New York, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Théâtre de la Ville Paris, Barbican London, Sydney Opera House, Festival d'Avignon and the Fondation Beyeler art museum. Martin's stage designs have won the Swiss Design Award three times in a row. He is an associated artist at maisondelaculture de Bourges / Scène Nationale and at Tanzhaus Zürich. In 2021, Martin received the top Swiss theatre award, the prestigious Grand Prix for the Performing Arts / Hans-Reinhart-Ring 2021. At Theater Basel, he is creating the family play 'Ciao Ciao' for the 2022/23 season.
