Anna Bergmann studied Theatre Studies, Philosophy and English at FU Berlin and Directing at Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin. Since 2003, she has worked as a director at various locations, including Schauspielhaus Bochum, Thalia Theater Hamburg, Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Münchner Volkstheater, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna and Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. Further, since 2014, she has also directed regularly at Uppsala Stadsteater and Malmö Stadsteater in Sweden, most recently ‹Persona› by Ingmar Bergman in a co-production with Deutsches Theater Berlin, with which she was invited to the 2019 Theatertreffen festival in Berlin. In 2016, she was nominated for the Austrian theatre prize «Nestroy» in the category Best Director for her production of ‹Fräulein Julie› at Theater in der Josefstadt.
Anna has been the Playhouse Director at Staatstheater Karlsruhe since the start of the 2018/19 season. Her decision to exclusively use female directors at the state theatre attracted national and international attention. The move aimed to redress the imbalances in Germany's theatre landscape and, in doing so, to showcase the compelling and distinctive directorial voices of talented women.
