Sato Choreographic collaboration

Rihoko Sato studied gymnastics in England and the United States. She joined Karas in 1996. Since then she has performed in all of the collective's group choreographies and is internationally known as one of the main characters in Teshigawara's works. In 2009, she presented her first solo piece 'She' directed by Teshigawara. Sato also assisted in Karas' educational project S.T.E.P. and worked as a choreographic assistant for Teshigawara's commissioned works for other dance companies. Sato received the Best Dancer Award for her duet with Vaclav Kunes in 'Scream and Whisper' at the Les Étoiles de Ballet 2000 Awards in Cannes in 2005, the Japan Dance Forum Award in 2007, the fortieth edition of the Premio Positano Leonide Massine Per la Danza in 2012 and the Japan dance critic new face award in 2016. In 2018, she received the Arts Promotion Award (Dance) from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In addition to her collaborations with Saburo Teshigawara and Karas, Sato now works on dance projects under her own name as a choreographer. Her first creations include the solos 'Vêpres de la Vierge' (2018) and 'Izumi' (2019), and the group piece 'Traces' for the Italian dance company Aterballetto (2019). In autumn 2022, her new solo piece 'Forest of Confession', a poetic journey through her dance and voice, premiered at Karas Apparatus.
