Andonis Foniadakis, who was raised in Crete, began his dance training with Niki Papadaki at the local dance school in his home town. This was followed by a course at the Athens State School of Dance, where he received the prestigious Maria Callas Scholarship. After graduating, Andonis continued his studies at the Rudra Béjart School Lausanne in Switzerland until 1994. He then danced and choreographed productions at prestigious theatres worldwide. Andonis was also commissioned to choreograph three operas and worked as the movement coordinator on the film ‹Noah› by Darren Aronofsyk. He founded his own dance company Apotosoma-Andonis Foniadakis in Lyon in 2003, with which he has presented seven full-length works to date. In 2012, Andonis received the Danza & Danza Award in Italy as Best Choreographer 2012 for the creation ‹Les Noces› with the Maggio Danza company at Florence Ballet, and in 2018 he won the award for Best Choreography from the Critics Union of Music and Theatre in Greece for his full-length piece ‹Galaxy›. Between 2016 and 2018, he was the artistic director of the Greek National Ballet. In addition to his work as a dancer and choreographer, Andonis also gives seminars based on his personal dance technique. As part of the double bill evening ‹Explosiv!›, he is creating a piece with Ballett Theater Basel for the first time in the 2022/23 season.
