Thomas Verstraeten (*1986) is a Belgian theatre-maker, actor and visual artist, who lives and works in Antwerp. Along with Stef Aerts, Joé Agemans and Marie Vinck, he is an integral part of the FC Bergman theatre company, which has received national and international acclaim for its plays and opera works. FC Bergman's artistic endeavours revolve around the fundamental nature of humans, incessantly pursuing growth and self-improvement. The productions are characterised by their expansive montages and bold theatrical experiments in vast spaces, featuring groups of extras and integrated videos. FC Bergman has been closely affiliated with Antwerp's Toneelhuis municipal theatre for six years. Thomas' artistic pursuits extend beyond his involvement with FC Bergman, encompassing a diverse range of performing and visual arts. Within his visual practice, Verstraeten skilfully weaves narratives inspired by the bustling movements of the city and its inhabitants, delving into both their apparent and concealed stories and lives. Through his videos, installations, and frequently interactive performances, Thomas transforms the mundane into the extraordinary. Theatralisation is «not about the creation of fiction, but the transformation and idealisation of time and space» (Bart Verschaffel, ‹On Theatricality›). Verstraeten's projects have already graced public urban spaces and cultural institutions.
