Ballett
Ballett Theater Basel stands for contemporary dance and is one of the best professional dance groups in Europe. The dancers are masters of classical ballet as well as modern dance and combine the highest level of dance performance with artistic dynamics and playful expressiveness. Our dance department celebrates huge success at home and abroad with narrative ballets and abstract, contemporary works. We regularly invite internationally renowned guest choreographers, such as Sharon Eyal, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman and Johan Inger, to Theater Basel. At the centre of the company’s artistic work is ballet director Richard Wherlock, who has been head of the dance department at Theater Basel for over twenty years. The 2022/23 season is Richard Wherlock's 22nd and last one as the artistic director and head choreographer of Ballett Theater Basel. We can look forward to more performances than ever before! A dazzling display of dance art awaits with five new evenings of ballet, three revivals and a total of ten guest choreographers!
New productions and revivals
We will be staging two classical ballet canons on the Grosse Bühne: ‹Giselle› by Pontus Lidberg and ‹Coppélia› by Edward Clug. In addition to these new creations, Richard Wherlock's version of ‹Heidi› can also be seen as a revival from the 2021/22 season – his last major production for Ballett Theater Basel. Wherlock's chamber ballet production ‹Empty Thrones› can be enjoyed again on the Kleine Bühne. A spectacular show on the Grosse Bühne will be the hugely popular work ‹Grand Finale› by shooting star Hofesh Shechter, a revival from the 2020/21 season. And contemporary abstract dance art is not forgotten either: In ‹Imbalanced Parallels›, two young choreography teams present their impulsive dance pieces on the Kleine Bühne; and the Schauspielhaus stage will be shaken to its foundations by the enfant terrible of the ballet world Alexander Ekman and his piece ‹FIT› and by Andonis Foniadakis' latest creation ‹Explosiv!›. In the 2022/23 season, a family ballet performance can be experienced for the first time at Theater Basel: ‹Ciao Ciao› by no less than the multi-artist Martin Zimmermann.
