Theater Basel is pretty big. So big in fact that you can easily get lost in the many corridors, between doors, stages and floors. Our guided tour takes youngsters on a playful expedition behind the scenes. We travel in the giraffe lift, go through a hidden tunnel and discover many more exciting things.

The guided tours are aimed specifically at children aged six and over and can also be enjoyed without an accompanying adult.
Between October and June we offer public guided tours of Theater Basel for adults, twice a month on Saturdays.

  • The dates are published in the newsletter and online once a month.
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Registration necessary
  • Fees: Free for kids

With support from Theaterverein Basel.

For all those of you staying in Basel during the autumn and carnival holidays, there are also holiday workshops for children aged six to eleven. From Monday to Friday, teachers from various Basel cultural institutions will each organise one day with the youngsters. Sometimes we go to the theatre, meet an orchestra or visit a museum. At the end of the week, you can rightly call yourself a cultural adventurer. Maximum of 15 children per workshop. Cultural and craft materials as well as lunch are included in the course fee.

  • Autumn holiday workshop: 3 – 7 October 2022
  • Carnival holiday workshop: 20 – 24 February 2023
  • Each day 9 am – 5 pm
  • CHF 250 per child
  • Maximum of 15 children per workshop

Childcare

Some of our performances are suitable for children. While others are still too long or too difficult for children to grasp. But this should not stop the adults and children going to the theatre together. While the adults enjoy a show on the Grosse Bühne, their grandchildren, nieces, nephews and little ones have a good time in our free workshop for children. We take a look behind the scenes. We solve a paper chase, have a sneak peek around the building from top to bottom and discover lots about theatre. Snacks and refreshments are also available.

With support from and on the initiative of Theaterverein Basel.

Our programme for families continues to grow in the 22/23 season! Starting in August, we will be presenting numerous pieces and projects at Theater Basel for children above the age of four and their adults. Further detailed information can be found in the new season booklet for families. Download and view the booklet here or pick up a free copy in our foyer or at the ticket office.

The question of age appropriateness to the content is often an important factor when choosing a performance to visit with your family. All our age recommendations should be interpreted as guidelines. We consider the content and themes of each performance, taboos, duration and levels of suspense. Obviously not all answers can be determined by age-related needs and demands, and not every five-year-old is «the same age». We believe it is important to approach theatre with courage. Since we know that stories build strength when experienced in a fun and safe atmosphere. There is a massive difference between a child sat alone in front of a TV and one enjoying a theatre experience with friends and family. A hand to hold onto during the performance and somebody to talk to after it put many age recommendations into perspective.

Sometimes the ideas and themes of a performance change during the rehearsal process. In this case, we adjust our age recommendations accordingly. The latest information is always available online.
