Zarzuela-Gala
To get in the mood for the premiere of the zarzuela ‹El barberillo de Lavapiés› on 27 September, the Theater Basel will be all about Spain for a day two weeks beforehand.
With arias and ensembles from ‹El barberillo de Lavapiés›, ‹El gato montés›, ‹La tempranica›, ‹La gran vía›, ‹La del manojo de rosas› and others, Los Paladines, Christof Loy's zarzuela company, will present highlights from ‹El barberillo de Lavapiés› and many other zarzuelas. This genre of Spanish entertainment theatre ranges from folkloric dances and choral movements to passionate arias - lust for life and desperate passion in the smallest of spaces. Lucero Tena, the grande dame of castanet playing, will cause a particular sensation.
The programme is dedicated to Montserrat Caballé (1933-2018), who laid the foundations for her international career in 1956 with her first stage appearance as Mimì in ‹La Bohème› at Theater Basel, during which time she repeatedly championed the zarzuela.
