A live film at the Schauspielhaus
Basel in the 20s. A few young people move into the city. They go in search of the others who live and work here: in nail studios, on the street, in formerly squatted houses, in leisure facilities, parks, in parallel worlds. It is also a journey into the history of the city. And it is not only characterized by the increase in money, but also by people and groups, the so-called violent youth of the 1980s and subsequent years, who campaigned for a fair distribution of wealth and for the recognition of diversity: for the distribution of goods, housing, education and culture. Basel, like many cities throughout Europe, has repressed political rebellion in recent years with high levels of police violence. Who still dares to stand up against this and where are the spaces to argue with each other beyond scandalization? The history of all cities is always also a history of structural violence and social differences.In reality and in people's everyday lives, they become normalized and are often not even perceived as such.As self-proclaimed counter-violence, the «violent» youth usually reaps incomprehension and contempt.Yet «youth» itself is as threatened as the climate. What does youth mean when there is no longer a viable future?The bourgeois part of society could at least recognize its seismographic function when it comes to putting its finger in the undeniable wounds of society.This is the ode. Who makes the city this city and what do people need to live?
On the occasion of the ode to violent youth, the Schauspielhaus becomes an arena for open confrontations for two weeks. The Social Fight Club. Mustermesse der Gewalt creates space for physical experiences and collective reflection.

Wie diese [sechs Schauspielenden] gemeinsam gehen oder stehen, schreitende Turnschuhe oder Himmel filmen, ruhig oder hypernervös filmen, ist exakt koordiniert. Ideen, wie die Kameras so nebeneinander zu stellen, dass ein Panorambild mit menschenverschluckenden Lücken entsteht, wirken unmittelbar.
Es ist eine beklemmende Story, wie das Stück als Ganzes überhaupt beklemmend ist. Man sieht auf der Leinwand zwar überall vertraute Bilder der Stadt, doch diese wirkt geisterhaft, erdrückend - das liegt nicht nur an der rastlosen, treibenden Musik, die das Visuelle begleitet, sondern vor allem an der konsequenten Hoffnungslosigkeit, die das starke Schauspielensemble auf ihren Irrwegen so eindrücklich über die Bildschirme transportiert.
Für eindrückliche Bilder sorgt Antoinette Ulrich, der lokale Neuzugang im Ensemble: Ihre Figur verweigert sich der normierten Stadt. In einer Art Erschöpfungsdepression liegt dieser Clown in der Kiesgrube, hinter sich die Kamine der Kehrichtverbrennungsanlage. Das in Schwarzweiss gefilmte Bild wirkt wie eine Szene von Regisseur Andrei Tarkowski: trostlos, aber aufgeladen mit stillem Trotz.
Man ist von einer komplexen Koordination beeindruckt, die es über Quartiere hinweg ermöglicht, dass etwa die Monolog-Fetzen sich in sekundenschneller Abfolge abwechseln. Das Publikum lacht über spontane Interaktionen oder kurze Dialoge mit Passanten.
Die Koordination, Mischung und Übertragung dieser vielen optischen und akustischen Quellen ist eine technische Meisterleistung.
Die Handykamera fährt oft nah ans Gesicht, zeigt in Grossformat und Ausschnitt aufgerissene Münder, gebleckte Zähne: drastische Bildeffekte bei diesen Interaktionen und Statements.
