Thomas Niehaus was born in Lübeck and studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover. He gained his first stage experience during his studies at the theatres in Lübeck and Hanover. In 2004, he joined Claus Peymann at the Berliner Ensemble, where he worked primarily with the directors Claus Peymann, Thomas Langhoff, Manfred Karge and Philip Tiedemann. His roles include Andri in Max Frisch's 'Andorra' and the Templar in Lessing's 'Nathan der Weise' as well as the role of Andreas Kragler in Philip Tiedemann's production of 'Trommeln in der Nacht' and Len in Bond's 'Gerettet'.

In the 2009/10 season, Thomas Niehaus took up his second permanent engagement at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. In 2014, together with Julian Greis, Mirco Kreibich, Daniel Lommatzsch, Jörg Pohl, Rafael Stachowiak, André Szymanski and Sebastian Zimmler, he was honoured with the Rolf Mares Award for best actor in 'Moby Dick'. This is the first time that this prize has been awarded to an ensemble. He has previously appeared at Theater Basel in Antú Romero Nunes' productions of 'Odyssee' and 'Molière - der eingebildete Tote'.
