Matthias Koch graduated as a stage and costume designer from the Dresden University of Fine Arts in 2005. He was an assistant set designer at the Staatstheater Stuttgart from 2005 to 2008 and was head of set design in the drama section in the 2008/2009 season. Since 2009, Matthias Koch has worked as a freelance stage and costume designer at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, Theater Basel, Maxim Gorki Theater, Staatstheater Stuttgart and Burgtheater Wien with directors Hans-Werner Kroesinger, Alexander Nerlich, Ronny Jakubaschk, Eike Hannemann, Dorothea Schroeder and Nina Gühlstorff.
He has a long-standing working relationship with the director Antú Romero Nunes, and has produced acclaimed productions at various theatres, including 'Die Räuber' (Maxim Gorki, 2012), 'Moby Dick' (Thalia Theater, 2013), 'Hotel Europa' or 'Der Antichrist' (Akademietheater Wien, 2015), 'Der Vampir' (Komische Oper Berlin, 2016), 'Orpheus' (Thalia Theater, 2018), 'Neverland' (Thalia Theater 2019). In 2016 Koch received the Rolf Mares Prize in the category 'Outstanding Stage Design' for 'The Castle'. His first work in Basel was 'Onkel Wanja' in 2021, followed by 'Die Mühle von Saint Pain', both directed by Antú Romero Nunes.
After the invitation of the production 'Die Odyssee' in 2018, another invitation to the Berlin Theatertreffen 2023 follows with 'Ein Sommernachtstraum'.
