Herbert Fritsch completed his acting training at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. From 1993 to 2007 he was one of the most influential actors at the Berlin Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz under Frank Castorf. At the Luzerner Theater he presented his first full-length directorial work 'Der Geizige'. Between 2007 and 2019, many other directing and stage design works followed, including 'Der Biberpelz' at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin and 'Nora' at the Theater Oberhausen, which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. In 2013 he staged his first opera, 'Drei Schwestern' at Zurich Opera House. This was followed in 2014 by 'Die Banditen' at Theater Bremen and 'Don Giovanni' at the Komische Oper Berlin. For 'der die mann' he received the 3sat Prize in 2016. From 2017 he worked at the Schaubühne Berlin for 'Zeppelin', 'Champignol wider Willen', 'Null' and 'Amphitryon'. In 2017 he received the Theaterpreis der Stiftung Preussische Seehandlung and was awarded Best Stage Designer by Theater heute in 2012 and 2013. In 2018 he staged 'Così fan tutte' at the Staatsoper Hamburg and 'Die Philosophie im Boudoir' at the Schauspielhaus Bochum. With 'Grimmige Märchen' he was invited to the Schweizer Theatertreffen in 2018. In 2019, he staged 'Zelt' at the Burgtheater Wien and the opera 'Salome' at the Luzerner Theater, among others. He is a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin. At Theater Basel, after 'Intermezzo' (2020), 'Die Nase' (2021) and 'Vergeigt' (2023), he will direct the production 'Pferd frisst Hut' in the 23/24 season.
