OperAvenir performs Rossini opera as puppet theatre
The wild folding puppets return: after its success in 2022 at the Schauspielhaus, the extraordinary opera studio production conquers the Grand Stage in Nikolaus Habjan's staging. Side by side with the life-size puppets, a young ensemble performs Rossini's repertoire classic as an entertaining confusion play full of speed and poetry. Musicians of the Sinfonieorchester Basel play in chamber music formation on stage.
There are only winners in this brilliant, imaginative, witty, but at moments also weird evening.

Theater Basel's production celebrating the 15th anniversary of its opera studio OperAvenir under the musical direction of Hélio Vida makes you happy. Even the overture by the 15-piece instrumental ensemble from the Basel Academy of Music, positioned on the left half of the stage, releases endorphins.
The virtuoso, perfectly crafted play by director and puppet-maker Nikolaus Habjan takes its course. Each of the seven singers, five of them members of the opera studio, also leads a puppet. Sometimes alone, like the magnificent Diego Savini as the sprightly Bartolo, endowed with a profound bass-baritone, sometimes in twos or threes.
Nowadays, productions of well-known repertoire works are almost always under pressure to offer something new, something never seen before. And this musical puppet theatre succeeds in a delightful way.
Special mention goes to the singers, for whom this production is a touchstone for their talent, which they all do justice to. In addition to their demanding singing parts, they have to instil the great puppets with their own character traits in order to achieve the desired fascination. The roles, which are almost exclusively performed by the talented young singers of the OperAvenir opera studio, offer a good opportunity to experience the high level of work that goes on here.
