Old ballet d’action with a new twist

Lise falls in love with a woman, Collette, instead of the young farmer Colas. And Alain, who has actually been chosen by Lise’s mother as her son-in-law, develops a somewhat peculiar relationship to a scarecrow. The famous chicken dance is performed by rabbits, and hay bales wrapped in plastic act as the stage set. ‹La fille mal gardée› is one of the oldest surviving ballets. The Belgian choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen transforms idyllic country life with down-to-earth characters into a queer story ballet with gender confusion and pleasurable ambiguity.
