An old outrage retold
The farmer's daughter Johanna hears heavenly voices commanding her to liberate France in the war. Initially celebrated as a visionary heroine, she is burned at the stake as a witch in 1431. To this day, the Maid of Orléans is a myth that is often appropriated. Some see her as a religious fanatic or a nationalist. Others recognise a feminist mastermind or a courageous idealist. Above all, however, she embodies the longing for a better world, which she fights for as a young woman, seemingly single-handedly. Belgian director Lies Pauwels creates her own punky, poetic world of images from numerous Johanna references.
