‹Into the Woods› in Basel liberates the musical from the cliché of pure entertainment and presents it as gripping musical theater with sophisticated depth.
The musical ‹Into the Woods› is a par force performance by the cast.
Crazy, dark, but always entertaining.
Musically, the evening is great! (...) There are ballads, a swing number or rap-like singing.
The ensemble is wonderfully selected, and the evening is musically convincing under the direction of Thomas Wise with consistently beautiful musical and one or two operatic voices.As the baker couple, Julia Klotz and Alen Hodzovic are not only immensely likeable, both clearly show the realization of their characters as empathetic, flawed people.
Conductor Thomas Wise holds the reins from the very beginning and ensures precision and a great wealth of instrumental colors with the Basel Symphony Orchestra's chamber music ensemble.
Once again, Theater Basel shows how a musical can be carefully staged and performed at a high level.
This highly aesthetic device (the superb glowing scene between Chaperon and Loups with their luminescent pupils is just one of its incessant climaxes) gradually gives way to pared-down simplicity: the entire stage recedes into the background, leaving in the foreground characters who have meanwhile been propelled into our own time by a second skin of contemporary costumes.
