Theater HORA & Christoph Marthaler examine the present
When Theater HORA was founded in Zurich in 1993, Christoph Marthaler staged his first production in Berlin, entitled ‹Murx den Europäer!› (Damn the Europeans!). A coincidence? Or the famous law of meaningful simultaneity? Either way, two exceptional artistic phenomena with Zurich roots and European appeal celebrated their premieres at the same moment. Thirty-three years later, the paths of these two anniversary celebrants are now crossing for the first time at Theater Basel. The moment seems ripe to find out what connects these headstrong theater makers. Marthaler and Theater HORA are going all out and founding a company with special dedication (GmbH). Perhaps there are other meanings hidden behind this abbreviation, but the partners have remained tight-lipped so far. Less mysterious, however, is the task that all those involved have set themselves: they want to test the present! The things of the present, the ideas of the present, the state of mind of the people who inhabit this present. No small undertaking. But who else should do it if not this brand-new company with special dedication?
