Sylvain Cambreling has been Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra since the start of the 2018/19 season. Born in Amiens in 1948, the exceptional conductor is one of the most important musical personalities of our time. His work for contemporary aesthetic standards in opera and his approach to programme design in the symphonic field have changed the world of music and had a lasting impact. Until the summer of 2018, Cambreling was General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera, which was named "Opera House of the Year" (2016) during this time, and was Chief Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo until March 2019. Cambreling fulfilled his role as Principal Guest Conductor of Klangforum Wien, which he took up in 1997, for more than 20 years. During his tenure as General Music Director, the Frankfurt Opera was named "Opera House of the Year" for the first time in 1995, and he himself was named "Conductor of the Year" in 2009. Between 1999 and 2011, Cambreling was chief conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg. His numerous recordings, including the complete works of Olivier Messiaen, are regarded as reference recordings.
