Musical direction
Stefan Klingele began his career at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, moved to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich as conductor and in 1999 to Bremen as Principal Conductor, where he was awarded the Kurt Hübner Prize in 2006. Under him as interim principal conductor, the theatre was voted Opera House of the Year by Opernwelt magazine in the 06/07 season. He has made guest appearances at the opera houses in Stockholm, Dresden, Frankfurt and Stuttgart as well as at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Komische Oper Berlin. Concert conducting engagements have taken him to the Braunschweig State Orchestra, the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock, the Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo Palermo and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra, among others. At the Hanover State Opera, he was the musical director of Benedikt von Peter's ‹Intolleranza 1960›, which was honoured with a Faust Prize by the German Stage Association. Under his direction, ‹Feuersnot› at the 2014 Dresden Music Festival was nominated for Best Richard Strauss Anniversary Performance at the Opera Awards London. From 2015 to 2022, Stefan Klingele was Music Director and Chief Conductor of Musikalische Komödie Leipzig and has been back in the same position in Bremen since summer 2022. There, the production ‹Doctor Atomic›, which he conducted musically, received the Kurt Hübner Prize of the Bremer Theaterfreunde in 2024. He will conduct ‹Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny› at Theater Basel in the 25/26 season.
