The German-American mezzo-soprano Sonja Koppelhuber studied in Detmold and Würzburg. She has been a permanent member of the opera choir at Theater Basel since 2018, where she also appears as a soloist. She is also passionate about her solo concert career, which has taken her to renowned concert halls such as the Philharmonie and Konzerthaus Berlin, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Frauenkirche Dresden, Herkulessaal Munich and renowned orchestras. In 2022, she took on the solo alto role in Philipp Glass' 'Einstein on the beach' at Theater Basel and was also heard in this production at the Wiener Festwochen and in Paris in 2023. Another highlight was her collaboration with Krzysztof Penderecki with concerts in Poland and Germany. From 2006 to 2017, Sonja Koppelhuber was a soloist at the Mainfranken Theatre in Würzburg. Here she enjoyed great success in numerous important roles in her repertoire, including Carmen, Suzuki, Dorabella, Hänsel, Sextus, Orlofsky and Orfeo. Guest contracts have taken her to the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Theater Chemnitz, Staatstheater Cottbus, Landestheater Coburg, Mittelsächsisches Theater Freiberg and the Markgräfliches Opernhaus Bayreuth. She was awarded the Mainfrankentheater Würzburg Theatre Prize for outstanding achievements in both 2007 and 2012. In 2011, she was a finalist in the "Concorso Internazionale Musica Sacra" competition in Rome.
