Sinfonieorchester Basel
Orchestra
Founded in 1876, the Basel Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 150th anniversary in the 2025/26 season. As one of the most traditional and renowned orchestras in Switzerland, it delights its audiences in the historic and acoustically outstanding music hall of the Stadtcasino Basel and as the resident orchestra of the Theater Basel. With over 100 musicians from 25 nations, it is one of the most important cultural institutions in Switzerland. Since the current season, the world-renowned conductor Markus Poschner has been chief conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra. One of Poschner's plans for the coming years is a cycle of all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies.
The Basel Symphony Orchestra is characterised by its high sound culture, artistic excellence and diversity. Its repertoire ranges from the Viennese Classical and Romantic periods to the most recent modern compositions. The orchestra has premiered numerous important works of the 20th and 21st centuries and works closely with the Paul Sacher Foundation and other partner institutions to promote contemporary music. In its own concert series, in numerous opera productions at Theater Basel and in guest performances at home and abroad, the innovative orchestra proves its high level of sound culture time and again.
