The British-American bass Sam Carl was born in London and initially studied English literature and music at the University of Glasgow. He then received singing lessons from David Jones in New York and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He was a finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition and received a scholarship from the Samling Foundation. He gained his first stage experience in roles such as Don Alfonso ‹Così fan tutte› and Bottom ‹A Midsummer Night’s Dream› and made a guest appearance as Betto ‹Gianni Schicchi› at the Barbican Hall. He was a Young Artist at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, where he sang the One-Armed Brother ‹Die Frau ohne Schatten›, Antonio ‹Le nozze di Figaro› and Lesbo ‹Agrippina›, as well as Equilibrium Young Artist with mentor Barbara Hannigan. In 2021 he made his debut as 2nd Priest in Dallapiccola's ‹Il prigioniero› at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and sang Dulcamara in ‹L’elisir d’amore› at Opera Zuid. He made his debuts at the Staatstheater Darmstadt as Colline in ‹La bohème› and Don Quichotte. He has a close collaboration with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where he was part of the Jerwood Young Artist Program in 2019 and has since returned as Nick Shakow in ‹The Rake’s Progress›, Leporello in ‹Don Giovanni› and Achilla in ‹Giulio Cesare in Egitto›. His current engagements include Der Geisterbote ‹Die Frau ohne Schatten› in Amsterdam and Timur ‹Turandot› at Theater Basel.
