Rachael Hewer was born in Grimsby, England, and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Her directing career has taken her to renowned opera houses and theatres, including Les Arts (Valencia), English National Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Dutch National Opera, Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House in London. She has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, in London West End productions and for numerous film and television productions for BBC, ITV and Sky. In 2020, she founded VOPERA (The Virtual Opera Project) and directed the award-winning film adaptation of Ravel's ‹L’enfant et les sortilèges›, which won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Opera and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre. In 2018, she won the special prize at the IV International Competition for Young Opera Directors in Moscow. Future engagements will take her to the Irish National Opera, the Aldeburgh Festival and the Theater Basel for ‹Die Zauberflöte›.
