Patrick Frank was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1975. He studied piano, music theory and composition at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and then cultural studies, specialising in philosophy and sociology, at the University of Lucerne. Since 2006, his compositional work has combined his own and others' cultural theory with art, including 'Indifferenz in Kunst und Kultur', which brought him to the European Centre for the Arts in Hellerau, and 'Wir sind aussergewöhnlich' (2014), which was performed at the Gessnerallee Zurich, the Sophiensælen Berlin and in Dresden. In 2015, he brought the theoretical opera 'Freiheit - die eutopische Gesellschaft' to the Donaueschinger Musiktage as well as to Zurich (Gessnerallee), Berlin (HKW) and Geneva. Commissions and performances have taken him to Vienna, the Rümlingen Festival, Tonlagen Hellerau, Tage für Neue Musik Zürich, the Festivale La Batie in Geneva and to radio programmes on Deutschlandradio Kultur, SWR, Bayrischer Rundfunk and SRF Kultur. In 2014, 2016 and 2018, he held workshops and lectures at the Darmstadt Summer Course and was a research assistant at the Institute for Theory at the ZHdK from 2011 to 2013.
