Monika Gintersdorfer studied German and theater, film and television studies in Cologne and directing in Hamburg. In 2004, together with Jochen Dehn, she founded the activist:innen group Rekolonisation in Hamburg. In 2005 she began her regular collaboration with the visual artist Knut Klassen. The German-French-West African theater/performance group Gintersdorfer/Klassen develop projects in which they make the life strategies and forms of expression of the performers the center and confront them with their own strategies and aesthetics. The group performs at theaters and festivals in Germany and Europe as well as in West Africa. In the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, Gintersdorfer/Klassen were artists in residence at Theater Bremen as part of Doppelpass. During this time, among others, the opera 'Les robots ne connaissent pas le blues' or 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail' were created in collaboration with Benedikt von Peter. Since 2012 Monika Gintersdorfer has been a member of the Academy of the Arts of the World, and in 2016 she was awarded the Carolin Neuber Prize. In 2022 she received the prize of the International Theatre Institute Germany (ITI). At Theater Basel, Gintersdorfer/Klassen will stage 'Yopougon-Ring', a performance project, in the 23/24 season.
