Michael Strecker grew up in Germany in a small village near Hanover, where he was born in 1966. He completed an internship at the State Opera in Hanover and at the age of 16 attended classical dance classes once a week in a village near his home. After four years studying at the University of Music, Theatre and Media in Hanover, he joined Joel Schnee's company at the theatre in Osnabrück for two years before moving to Amsterdam to dance with the Dansgroup Krisztina de Châtel and Conny Janssen Danst for eight years. In Amsterdam, he saw Pina Bausch's 'Café Müller', 'Das Frühlingsopfer' and 'Die Sieben Todsünden'. These pieces awakened in him the dream of one day being able to dance something similar. A friend signed him up for auditions with Pina Bausch, and that's how he ended up in Wuppertal. Michael Strecker has been a permanent member of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch since 1997.
