Musical direction
Mathias Weibel comes from Bern, is originally a violinist and is at home in a wide variety of musical styles. He studied in Bern, Florence and Vienna and played as a baroque violin specialist in various ensembles such as Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hesperion XX and La Folia Madrid. He now lives in Zurich, where he founded the Ensemble Turicum together with the Brazilian singer Luiz Alves da Silva. He is a member of the Basel Chamber Orchestra and also plays Argentinian tango and works with Spanish flamenco musicians. In collaboration with director Thom Luz, he has performed in recent years as a theatre musician, arranger and pianist at the Theater Basel, the Staatstheater Oldenburg, the Staatstheater Hannover and the Deutsches Theater Berlin, among others. He has performed in the productions ‹When I Die› and ‹Unusual Weather Phenomena Project› at the Gessnerallee Zurich, the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and the Autorentheatertage of the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Théâtre des Amandiers Nanterre and other international festivals. He was seen and heard at Theater Basel in the production ‹LSD mein Sorgenkind›. At the Schauspielhaus Zurich, he has worked with directors Christoph Marthaler, Stefan Pucher and choreographer Meg Stuart. He realised the productions ‹Vrenelis Gärtli› and ‹Gallus› with director Jonas Knecht. In the 25/26 season, he is once again working with Thom Luz on ‹Don Quichotte›.
