Lilit Hakobyan

Lilit Hakobyan is an Armenian interdisciplinary artist based in Berlin. Her artistic focus is on choreography and photography. She completed her training at the State Ballet College in Yerevan and continued her studies at the University of Theater and Film. For over 14 years, she was a member of the ensemble of the State Ballet Hannover, where she worked with internationally renowned choreographers such as Marco Goecke, Sharon Eyal, Sol León & Paul Lightfoot, Jiří Kylián, Medhi Walerski, Johan Inger, Hans van Manen, and Jörg Mannes. Lilith Hakobyan has also been working as a choreographer since 2011. Her first work, ‹Einfach Hölle›, inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre's drama ‹Geschlossene Gesellschaft›, was performed at the Theater Osnabrück and the LOT Theater Braunschweig, among others. In 2023, she created her first full-length commissioned works, ‹The Terranauts› for Theater Hof and ‹Heartless› for the Kannon Dance Company as part of the Yerevan Summer Festival, inspired by essays by Hannah Arendt. Her choreography ‹LUCK› won three prizes at the pioneering International Choreography Competition in Hanover in 2024. This was followed in 2025 by ‹Out of LOVE› for the Oldenburg State Ballet. In addition to the world premiere for the Basel Ballet, a new work for Tanz Linz is also planned for 2026. In her works, Lilit Hakobyan combines dance and visual media in an organic way: cinematic imagery shapes her choreographic language, while her photography captures the dynamic atmosphere of the stage. As part of the ‹New Works› series, Lilit Hakobyan will present ‹The Urge› to Basel audiences for the first time in the 25/26 season.
