Musical direction
José Miguel Pérez-Sierra has been musical director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid since November 2023. He was assistant to Gabriele Ferro at the Teatro di San Carlo (Naples), Teatro Massimo (Palermo) and Teatro Real (Madrid) and studied in Siena and London. He had an important collaboration with Alberto Zedda, whose assistant he was between 2004 and 2009. He made his debut on the conductor's podium in 2005 with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and in 2006 was the youngest conductor to conduct ‹Il viaggio a Reims› at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. Since then, he has performed works ranging from baroque to contemporary music in the most prestigious theaters and concert halls in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Georgia, Canada, Uruguay and Chile. He has worked with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, Montevideo Philharmonic, the Robert Schumann Philharmonic and the Portuguese Orquesta do Norte, among others. Most recently, he conducted ‹Samson et Dalila› at the Ópera de Tenerife and ‹La bohème› at the Ópera de Las Palmas. He made his debut as a conductor at Theater Basel in ‹Turandot› (2025) and returns here in the 25/26 season for ‹El barberillo de Lavapiés›.
